There’s a specific Swansboro rule: if the menu mentions hushpuppies and the boat ramp is visible, you’re probably in for a good meal. I’ve spent weeks verifying that rule up and down Front Street, from the sunset tables at Saltwater Grill to the dry rub wings at Fish Hut Grill that made us order a second round without shame.

Between the Italian kitchen doing right by fra diavolo and a fish market that will clean your whole catch on the spot, this town doesn’t do a single boring plate. Here’s where to eat your way through the water.

Highlights
Fresh seafood, great waterfront views
Attentive service, complimentary dessert
Perfectly cooked shrimp and tuna

The Saltwater Grill sits right on the water, and the view alone is worth the stop. I ordered the shrimp and the tuna, both cooked perfectly. The shrimp had a nice snap, and the tuna was seared just right on the outside, pink in the middle. Service was attentive without hovering. They even brought out a complimentary dessert, which felt like a genuine treat rather than a gimmick. It is a straightforward, quality seafood experience. No fuss, just good food and a great setting. I would go back for the sunset crowd, but I would also go for the lunch specials. A solid choice in Swansboro.

Worth another visit

Preston's Corner Bar & Grill surprised me. I walked in expecting a typical bar menu, but the crab bisque was the real deal. Rich, creamy, and full of lump crab meat. The spinach salad was also a standout, fresh with a warm bacon dressing that tied it together. Our waitress was friendly and efficient, and I had booked a table online without any hassle. The place has a casual energy, but the food has more polish than you would expect. I left already planning my next visit. That bisque is going to haunt me in the best way.

Anniversary-worthy service

il Cigno Italiano is not your typical seafood spot, but that is exactly why I loved it. I started with the calamari, which was tender and lightly fried. Then came the fra diavolo, and the sauce had a real kick, not just tomato water. The vodka sauce with meatballs was also rich and comforting. Chef Jason clearly knows what he is doing, and our server Noah was a pro, mixing a mean cocktail and checking in just the right amount. We were there for an anniversary, and the staff made it feel special without being over the top. A different kind of seafood night, and a memorable one.

Outer Banks Boil Company delivers exactly what the name promises. I went with a group, including kids, and everyone left happy. The portions are generous, and the seafood was fresh and full of flavor. The secret seasoning on the boil is worth writing home about, a mix of heat and spice that does not overpower the shrimp and corn. Service was on time and had a fun personality, which made the meal feel like an event. It is a perfect family dinner spot, especially after a long beach day. We rolled out stuffed, already talking about when we could come back. Simple, solid, and satisfying.

Cool concept with a chill vibe
Fresh bite after beach relaxation

Fish Hut Grill is a casual stop with serious flavor. I had the fried shrimp and the blackened shrimp, and honestly, I could not pick a winner. Both were excellent. The fries were crunchy and the cheese curds were a nice surprise, squeaky and fresh. But the real show stealer was the dry rub wings. They came out sticky and spicy, and we ordered a second round without hesitation. The vibe is chill, the kind of place where you can show up in flip flops and not feel out of place. A great pick for a relaxed meal after the beach.

The Trading Post has a name that sounds like a gift shop, but it is a proper Southern kitchen. I ordered the shrimp and grits, and the grits were creamy, the shrimp plump, and the bacon gave it that smoky depth. The crab cake benedict at the next table looked incredible, and I will be ordering that next time. Our server, Nick, had great recommendations and clearly knew the menu inside and out. The fried oysters and flounder were also exceptional. Sitting on the back patio, it felt like a true Southern evening. Relaxed, welcoming, and the food is serious. A real find.

El Catrin Mexican Kitchen might not seem like a seafood pick, but do not skip it. The birria nachos were loaded with tender, spiced meat and melted cheese, perfect for sharing. The birria burrito was just as good, rich and savory, with a side of consommé for dipping. The chips arrived warm and the salsa was fresh, not from a jar. We were seated right away, and the service was fast and friendly. It is a lively spot with colorful decor and a fun energy. If you want a break from fried fish, this is the place for a different kind of coastal flavor.

Flipperz Family Bar & Grill is a name that makes you smile, and the food seals the deal. The fried pickles were truly the best I have had, crispy on the outside, tangy inside. The salad was fresh and crisp, a cut above the usual bar fare. The burgers were juicy, and the fish tacos were light and flaky. Our waitress was personable and made us feel like regulars on a first visit. I overheard another table saying they come back every week, and I get it. Easy, fun, and reliable. A great casual spot for a family meal or a catch-up with friends.

Riverside Steak & Seafood lives up to its name. I went for the seafood, but the steaks looked equally tempting. The crab dip was creamy and served hot with garlic bread that was perfect for scooping. For the main, I had the Cajun mahi over pasta, and the spice level was just right, with a creamy sauce that tied it all together. The blackened grouper was light and flaky, cooked beautifully. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, with attentive service that does not rush you. It feels like a place where locals go for a special dinner, and for good reason. I left impressed.

Jordan's Smokehouse & Seafood is the kind of place you hope to stumble upon. The service was fast, and the food came out hot and fresh. The atmosphere is laid-back, full of folks who clearly know the menu well. It has the feel of a neighborhood spot where everyone is welcome. If you want good seafood without the tourist markup, this is it. I will be back, and I will bring a bigger appetite.

By The Bridge knows how to do breakfast. I stopped in for a late morning meal and ordered the loaded croissant with two eggs. It came out huge, but it was balanced, not just a pile of stuff. The orange juice was freshly squeezed and tasted like actual oranges, not concentrate. The pork Havana Bowl was also tempting, and I saw a few at nearby tables that looked fantastic. Service was friendly and quick, even during the rush. It is the kind of place where you can sit and linger, but you will not be forgotten. A great start to a day on the water.

Clyde Phillips Seafood MKT is the kind of place that reminds you why you come to a coastal town. It is a true old-school fish market. The staff were friendly and happy to explain what was freshest that morning. Prices were fair, especially for the quality. If you are cooking at home, this is the spot to stock up. I left with a bag full of shrimp and a new favorite place in town.
