Oak Island doesn’t do fussy. That’s the charm.

Between the Lowcountry boil joints and the pub grilles tucked behind the golf course, you’ll find a spectrum that swings from sand-in-your-shoes seafood shacks to a brewpub pouring a hazy IPA you’d swear was made in Wilmington. The smoked tuna Caesar at one waterfront spot alone justifies the drive over the bridge.

So skip the chain strip and point your cooler toward the places below.

Service at the bar was attentive—our drinks never sat empty for long. They had a few trivia games and shuffleboard, which kept the whole family entertained. It's a casual, family-friendly spot, and the starters (like the loaded nachos) are sharable and generous. For a laid-back meal with good burgers and a cold beer, this hits the mark.

Thai Noodle House Cuisine is a compact spot with a big menu. The inside is cozy, with only a handful of tables, but the service is warm and efficient. We ordered the sweet and sour chicken, which came with a tangy, balanced sauce and crisp vegetables. The fried udon noodles were hearty, with a savory stir-fry sauce and plenty of protein. Portions are generous enough for two meals. The strawberry bubble tea is a standout—sweet, creamy, with the right amount of chew from the tapioca. Prices are fair, especially considering the quality. If you're craving Thai on the island, this is the place.

Duffer's Pub & Grille sits right on the golf course, which gives it a unique backdrop. The inside is your standard pub: dark wood, TVs, and a few booths. There's also a patio, which is nice when the weather cooperates. The Angus burger is hearty, cooked to order, and served with a side of decent fries. Service was prompt, and the bartender poured a proper pint. I've eaten here a few times, and the food has been consistent each visit. It's not fancy, but it's reliable. If you're looking for a casual meal after a round or just a beer with a view, this works.

Fishy Fishy Cafe delivers on its name. The fish and chips are the star—beer-battered, flaky, and not greasy, with a side of good tartar sauce. The seating is mostly outside, right on the water, which makes a difference on a sunny day. Service was friendly and efficient, even with a full deck. We also tried the shrimp tacos, which were fresh and topped with a nice slaw. The cocktails were well-made, and the local beer list is solid. It's a busy spot, so expect a bit of a wait during peak hours. Still, the view and the food make it worth it.

Solar Brewing Company is a great place to bring the whole family. They poured us a complimentary tasting flight on our first visit, which was a nice way to sample their brews. The pizza, oddly enough, is a highlight—thin crust, generous toppings, and crispy cheese. The kids played board games while we enjoyed our beers, and the staff was happy to chat about the brewing process. It's a relaxed, open space with a community feel. Exceptional service and cuisine
Signature hot sauce worth buying
Smoked tuna Caesar salad standout
Excellent seafood tower selection
All main dishes rated highly

Seabird is a cut above the typical beach eatery. The service is polished without being stuffy, and the food shows attention to detail. The smoked tuna Caesar salad is a standout—the fish is smoky, flaky, and pairs well with the creamy dressing. We also shared the seafood tower, which had oysters, shrimp, and crab claws, all fresh and beautifully presented. The signature hot sauce is worth taking home; it's got a slow burn that complements seafood well. Every main dish we tried was cooked precisely. It's a bit pricier than other spots, but the quality justifies it. A memorable meal.

Check-in was easy, and the staff were genuinely welcoming. They offer complimentary bikes, which we used to ride down to the pier—a nice bonus. The location is ideal, with several restaurants within walking distance. It's not a resort, but it doesn't pretend to be. For a clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced beach stay, this is a strong option. We'll be back.
